Today more than ever, nutrition is a field in which global inequalities between the Global North and South are starkly evident – particularly when it comes to childhood. In developed countries, on one hand, the rates of obesity and overweight among young people are rising at an alarming pace; on the other, the incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes is increasing among adults – conditions that are heavily influenced by (poor) eating habits typically “acquired” during childhood and adolescence.
In developing countries, the situation reflects a discouraging and seemingly endless emergency: millions of underweight children suffering from chronic nutritional deficiencies, and an extremely high incidence of malnutrition as one of the leading causes of child mortality.
